2012 Winter Ice Fishing

17.5″ Rainbow Trout caught at Bear Lake
Rob at Bear Lake  January 3, 2012

Our 1st Entry of the Winter Season

“Caught 10, kept 7. Caught most of them on barbless hooks with Salmon eggs – 6-12 foot depth. The other 3 were small ones that were lip hooked so we released them. Thanks to Dave for all the help. Fished between 10:15AM and 3:00 PM. They were all from Bear Lake. The big fish is in the group of fish that Rob is holding. The biggest one was a 17.5 inch rainbow. My Guest caught this one (Rob). Rob cleaned these fish and will eat them. Several of the females were full of eggs.”

A healthy 18 1/2 in. rainbow trout (2 1/2lbs)

It could not resist my silver kastmaster I was using at Sun Lake .”

Thank you, Matt Spoden

The fish were all caught at Buffalo using shrimp and spinner jigs as bait.  All of the fish caught were rainbows, a total of 6 were caught, 3 kept.  The three kept were 17″, 15″ and 14″ respectively.  All had good color and healthy.  I brought my neighbor up as a guest and he caught the 15″ rainbow on a silver spinner jig.  The ice at both Sun and Buffalo was still a good 20 inches deep.  We did not have any action at Sun, but an overall perfect day at Trout Haven!
